R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The city of Houston lost an admired business and |
|
civic leader on September 27, 2012, when Lloyd McReynolds passed |
|
away at the age of 85; and |
|
WHEREAS, A fourth-generation Houstonian, "Bland" McReynolds |
|
was born on August 18, 1927, to Lloyd and Hazel McReynolds; he |
|
overcame polio as a young child and was playing on a basketball team |
|
by the time he was a teenager; he later helped lead a local Sea Scout |
|
troop and participated in civil defense exercises; in 1946, he |
|
graduated from The Kinkaid School, and in 1950, he earned a |
|
bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University, where he was |
|
a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; and |
|
WHEREAS, After college, Mr. McReynolds returned to Houston to |
|
work for the family business, Universal Printing, for several |
|
years, before selling it to begin what would become a long and |
|
successful career in real estate and investment; a prominent figure |
|
in his professional community, Mr. McReynolds helped organize the |
|
Houston Apartment Association, served as the first president of the |
|
Texas Apartment Association, and cofounded Pan American Land |
|
Company; moreover, he established and owned Bland McReynolds |
|
Interests and River Oaks Commercial Corporation and was the general |
|
partner of West Belt Crossing; and |
|
WHEREAS, Civically engaged, Mr. McReynolds served as chair of |
|
the Houston City Planning Commission, president of the Zoological |
|
Society of Houston, and director of Civil Defense under three |
|
mayors; he was also active with local causes supporting property |
|
rights and taxpayer interests, and he was part of the Houston host |
|
committee to re-elect President Gerald Ford; in addition, he was a |
|
director and chair of the board of Union Bank of Houston, and served |
|
as a director of numerous other financial institutions in the area; |
|
in addition, Mr. McReynolds was director and president of the River |
|
Oaks Property Owners Association and a cofounder and director of |
|
the National Foundation for Ileitis and Colitis; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan married LaNelle Ueckert in 1959 |
|
and they became the parents of three children, Melanie, John, and |
|
Joseph; at the age of 70, he married the former Judy Baumann and |
|
they shared 15 rewarding years together; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. McReynolds was a member of the Navy League of the |
|
United States and a colonel in the Commemorative Air Force, and in |
|
his leisure time, he loved flying friends and family around in his |
|
prized PA 31P Navajo airplane; an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed |
|
skeet shooting and bird hunting, and he also took great pleasure in |
|
boating with family and friends on Lake McQueeney; he was a member |
|
of River Oaks Country Club, the Coronado Club, the Key Club, Lake |
|
Breeze Ski Lodge, and the Greater Houston Gun Club; and |
|
WHEREAS, Friendly and outgoing, Bland McReynolds made a |
|
positive difference in countless lives through his dedication to |
|
the city he was proud to call home, and he will be remembered with |
|
great admiration by all those who had the good fortune to know him; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Lloyd "Bland" |
|
McReynolds and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his |
|
family: to his wife, Judy Baumann; to his children, Melanie |
|
Lehmberg and her husband, Tim, John M. McReynolds and his wife, |
|
Karen, and Joseph Bland McReynolds; to his grandchildren, Katy |
|
George and her husband, Stephen, Scott, Grant, and Matthew |
|
Buchanan, Francie Krienitz and her husband, Dean, and Cameron, |
|
Laura Anne, Ellie, J. D., and Sarah McReynolds; to his sister, |
|
Dorothy Browne; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bland |
|
McReynolds. |
