R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Former Comal County judge and school superintendent |
|
Max R. Wommack, Sr., of Seguin passed away on April 5, 2013, at the |
|
age of 97, leaving his circle of family and friends to cherish their |
|
happy memories of time spent in his company; and |
|
WHEREAS, Max Wommack was born on November 9, 1915, in |
|
Marietta to Wiley and Mary Wommack; the ninth of 11 children, he |
|
attended elementary school in Marietta and graduated from Naples |
|
High School in 1934 before going on to earn a degree in agriculture |
|
from Texas A&M University in 1941; he briefly taught in his hometown |
|
before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, |
|
attaining the rank of first lieutenant; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1947, Mr. Wommack moved to New Braunfels to |
|
resume his career in education; after initially working at a G.I. |
|
school, he taught vocational agriculture at New Braunfels High |
|
School, and he was known for his ability to inspire young people; he |
|
earned a master's degree from Southwest Texas State University in |
|
1955, and he was elected superintendent of the Comal County School |
|
District in 1961, where he served for eight years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Wommack was elected county judge in 1970, and he |
|
served for 12 years as the head of the commissioners court; his |
|
dedication to the local community was also exemplified by his |
|
charter membership in the New Braunfels Elks Lodge and American |
|
Legion Post No. 179, and he was a member of the New Braunfels Noon |
|
Lions Club; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Wommack continued his military career as a |
|
battery commander in a local National Guard unit and, later, as a |
|
member of the U.S. Army Reserve, from which he ultimately retired |
|
as a major; he worshipped at Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Seguin, |
|
and in his free time, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, bowling, |
|
playing dominoes, and telling stories and jokes; and |
|
WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, he married the former |
|
Christiana Eiband in 1948, and they became the parents of two sons, |
|
Max and John, before she passed away in 1971; fortunate to find love |
|
a second time, Mr. Wommack wed Anita Engelke in 1973, and they |
|
shared four decades together before her death in 2013; Mr. Wommack |
|
had the pleasure of welcoming into his family two stepchildren and |
|
numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through his dedicated work as an educator and |
|
elected official, Max Wommack greatly benefited Comal County and |
|
its citizens, and he will long be fondly remembered by all who had |
|
the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Max R. Wommack, Sr., |
|
and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|
sons, Max R. Wommack, Jr., and his wife, Janis, and John E. Wommack |
|
and his wife, Gayna; to his stepson, Emmett Engelke, and his wife, |
|
Delores; to his stepdaughter, Joyce Hartenstein, and her husband, |
|
Charlie; to his 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and to |
|
his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Max |
|
Wommack. |
