R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Civic, religious, and artistic leaders from Dallas
  gathered on April 27, 2013, to honor Curtis King, founder and
  president of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, for his
  achievements in fostering and showcasing African American cultural
  endeavors; and
         WHEREAS, Entering its 36th season, The Black Academy of Arts
  and Letters is one of the preeminent fine arts organizations in the
  country; each year, it produces more than 100 programs in the
  performing, literary, and visual arts, reaching an audience of
  500,000 patrons; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of Jackson State University, Curtis King
  earned his master's degree in theater from Texas Christian
  University; he established TBAAL in 1977 to carry on the work of the
  New York-based Black Academy of Arts and Letters and to help
  preserve historic documents and artifacts that might have been lost
  when that institution dissolved; highly regarded as a producer and
  director, Mr. King has staged shows at major venues throughout the
  United States, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the
  Performing Arts and the Apollo Theater, as well as abroad; and
         WHEREAS, This dynamic impresario is also committed to
  encouraging the development of emerging artists and to providing
  arts programming for Dallas-area youth; over the years, such
  well-known stars as Grammy winners Erykah Badu and Roy Hargrove and
  Emmy winner Regina Taylor have honed their talents under the wing of
  TBAAL; and
         WHEREAS, Curtis King's leadership and expertise have made him
  an influential figure in the world of the creative arts, and it is a
  privilege to recognize his outstanding contributions to the
  cultural vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Curtis King on his many accomplishments as
  founder and president of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters and
  extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
