R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Descendants of Colonel Samuel S. Lewis, an early
Texas colonist and congressman, are gathering at Sand Ridge

Lewis married the former Sarah LeMaster in Kentucky and
subsequently moved to the Indiana Territory; he and his wife became
the parents of seven children, two of whom were born after Indiana
achieved statehood; Colonel Lewis joined the Indiana Militia in
1813 and served in the War of 1812; soon afterward, in 1815, he
cofounded the town of Orleans, a community whose name recalled the
last major battle of the recent conflict; in the mid-1820s, he moved
with his family to Louisiana, where he became justice of the peace
  for Ouachita Parish; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Lewis settled with his wife and children in
Texas in 1832, in the Bevil municipality on Indian Creek; he served
as a lieutenant colonel in the Battle of Nacogdoches and
participated in the Siege of Bexar; a Bevil delegate to the
Consultation of 1835, he represented Jasper County in the First and
Second Congresses of the Republic of Texas; he died on February 10,
1838, at his plantation, and he was laid to rest in Sand Ridge
Cemetery, where many of his descendants eventually found their last
  repose; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Samuel S. Lewis played an important role in
the history of the Lone Star State, and the placement of a
  historical marker is indeed a fitting tribute to his contributions;
  now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the historical
marker honoring Colonel Samuel S. Lewis in Sand Ridge Cemetery and

  further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
for the Sand Ridge Cemetery Association and the descendants of
