R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, George Chandler of Lufkin has distinguished himself |
|
|
as an exceptional attorney and member of his community; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of East Texas, Mr. Chandler attended Baylor |
|
|
University on a tennis scholarship, and he was named the most |
|
|
valuable player of the 1960 team; on completing his undergraduate |
|
|
degree, he enrolled at Baylor Law School, where he was a member of |
|
|
the Baylor Law Review, and after graduating in 1962, he worked |
|
|
briefly for the firm of Edwards & DeAnda in Corpus Christi; he |
|
|
established his own firm, Chandler, Mathis & Zivley, in Lufkin in |
|
|
1971, specializing in plaintiff's personal injury and commercial |
|
|
trial law; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler's leadership and vision is greatly |
|
|
valued by his peers, and he is one of the most frequently requested |
|
|
speakers on trial strategies in Texas and throughout the nation; a |
|
|
diplomate of both the American Board of Trial Advocates and the |
|
|
National Board of Trial Advocacy, he is among a select group of |
|
|
trial lawyers worldwide invited to join the prestigious |
|
|
International Academy of Trial Lawyers; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association |
|
|
elected Mr. Chandler as their president in 2003, and he has served |
|
|
on the group's executive committee since 1999; he has further |
|
|
contributed his expertise as a state committeeman from Texas for |
|
|
the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and he is a founding |
|
|
member of the Tonahill Society, a group of trial lawyers and judges |
|
|
dedicated to the preservation of trial by jury and the betterment of |
|
|
the legal profession; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has amassed an impressive number |
|
|
of awards, including being chosen by Texas Monthly as a Texas Super |
|
|
Lawyer from 2003 to 2012; in addition, he is the recipient of the |
|
|
Texas Bar Foundation Roland D. Secrest Award, the Baylor Lawyer of |
|
|
the Year award, and the TTLA Lifetime Achievement Award; most |
|
|
recently, he was presented with the John Hannah, Jr. Award for |
|
|
Public Service from the Bar Association of the Eastern District of |
|
|
Texas; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dedicated to giving back, Mr. Chandler has |
|
|
generously shared his time, talents, and resources with a number of |
|
|
organizations and worthy causes, including the Community Chest, the |
|
|
American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society; moreover, he |
|
|
has served on the board of directors of both the local Jaycees and |
|
|
Lions Club, and while he was the president of the Lufkin Tennis |
|
|
Club, he helped initiate a countywide tennis program; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler was inspired to achieve by his father, |
|
|
Charles O'Hara Chandler, who was a pioneer in Texas public |
|
|
education and an advocate for students across the Lone Star State; |
|
|
serving many of his 103 years as a teacher, coach, and |
|
|
superintendent of schools in Orange and Victoria, Charles Chandler |
|
|
was also a founder and the first chair of the Teacher Retirement |
|
|
System of Texas; George Chandler long enjoyed the enthusiastic |
|
|
support of his father, who passed away in June 2011; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler and his wife, Martha, have celebrated |
|
|
more than a half-century of marriage, and they are the parents of a |
|
|
daughter, Kelly Michaels, and a son, the late Reich Chandler; the |
|
|
couple are valued congregants at First Baptist Church, where they |
|
|
have taught adult Sunday school classes for many years; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, George Chandler has devoted his life to advancing |
|
|
the highest ideals of his profession and helping those who have |
|
|
suffered injury and injustice, and in so doing, he has set an |
|
|
outstanding example of commitment and achievement to which all may |
|
|
aspire; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby honor George Chandler for his noteworthy record |
|
|
of accomplishment and extend to him sincere best wishes for the |
|
|
future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Chandler as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
