R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of the Houston Area has
  elected Carolyn Mata to serve as its president beginning in 2013,
  and she brings a proven record of achievement to her new role; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 1920 after the passing of the
  Nineteenth Amendment, the League of Women Voters of the Houston
  Area is a nonpartisan political organization working to promote an
  active and well-informed electorate; to that end, the group's
  Education Fund provides research and publications and hosts forums
  on major policy issues to increase public awareness and engagement;
  and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Mata has been a league member for 15 years and
  has distinguished herself in a number of leadership positions along
  the way, serving as a valued member of its board of directors, as
  chair of its Natural Resources Committee, and as a member of its
  Long Range Planning Committee; in 2011, she retired from the Retina
  Research Foundation after 11 years of service, and she previously
  worked at Rice University for 14 years; this dynamic Texan holds a
  bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Houston and a
  master's degree in counseling from Sonoma State University; and
         WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of the Houston Area has
  long been a source of vital information about matters of
  significance to all citizens and a catalyst for civic
  participation, and the organization will benefit greatly from the
  experience and dedication of Carolyn Mata; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the League of Women Voters of the Houston
  Area, congratulate Carolyn Mata on her election as president, and
  extend to all its members sincere best wishes for the future; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the league as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
