R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may
  temper the profound sadness that the death of Mike Moses Anzaldua,
  Jr., on December 21, 2012, has brought to all who loved him; and
         WHEREAS, The son of Mike and Maria Anzaldua, Mr. Anzaldua was
  born on November 26, 1944; he grew up in Robstown and was an honor
  roll student and all-state musician at Robstown High School; he
  went on to earn degrees from Del Mar College and East Texas State
  University; and
         WHEREAS, Returning to Del Mar as an English professor in
  1969, Mr. Anzaldua went on to build a notable career in higher
  education that spanned more than four decades; he served as chair of
  the Department of English and Philosophy and interim dean of Arts
  and Sciences, and he helped lead such innovations as the College
  Development Education Council, the Mariachi Del Mar musical
  initiative, and the Mexican American Studies program; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Anzaldua also contributed to Del Mar College as
  a tenured member of the Faculty Council, as assistant director of
  the East Campus Writing Center, and as director of the Title V
  Learning Communities Program; in addition, he was instrumental in
  the institution's reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern
  Association of Colleges and Schools; and
         WHEREAS, Off campus, Mr. Anzaldua gave back to his profession
  as an officer in several national education organizations,
  including the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education; he
  earned many prestigious honors for his exceptional work through the
  years, among them the Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching
  Excellence, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement
  Teaching Award, the Spanish Language Institute Outstanding
  Lecturer Medallion, and the National Institute for Staff and
  Organizational Development Excellence in Teaching Award; at the
  time of his death, he was professor emeritus of English; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan was involved in the greater
  community as a longtime church choir director, and in his leisure
  time he enjoyed discussing literature, going to the movies, and
  sharing a meal with friends and loved ones; and
         WHEREAS, Although Mike Anzaldua is deeply missed, memories of
  his warmth, unfailing generosity, and passion for education remain
  to comfort and inspire those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mike Moses Anzaldua,
  Jr., and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to
  his sister, Della Pierce, and her husband, Jim; to his brother, Jack
  Anzaldua, and his wife, Alma; to his nephews, Christopher Anzaldua
  and his wife, Karla, Stephen Anzaldua and his wife, Amanda, Paul
  Anzaldua and his wife, Alisha, David Pierce and his wife, Jessica,
  and Dr. Jeffrey Pierce; to his grandniece, Ana Teresa Anzaldua; and
  to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mike
  Anzaldua, Jr.
