R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, Grady Smithey, Jr., is receiving the 2013 |
|
|
Distinguished Leadership Award from Leadership Southwest on May 22, |
|
|
2013; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of the Leadership Southwest Class of |
|
|
1999, Grady Smithey has set an outstanding example of civic |
|
|
engagement; he served as a Duncanville city councilman for 22 |
|
|
years, including as mayor pro tem for seven terms, and he was the |
|
|
first president of the Community and Economic Development |
|
|
Corporation; moreover, he represented his fellow citizens as |
|
|
president of Texas Municipal League Region 13; his devotion to |
|
|
Duncanville, which he has called home since the early 1950s, is |
|
|
further evidenced by his service as chair of the park board, and he |
|
|
is credited with greatly increasing city parkland; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Smithey has long advocated for better |
|
|
infrastructure, and his efforts to improve transportation have |
|
|
earned him the nickname of "Road Warrior"; he was a member of the |
|
|
Regional Transportation Council of the North Central Texas Council |
|
|
of Governments for 13 years and was responsible for bringing a |
|
|
number of federally funded projects to the area; he has chaired the |
|
|
Southwest Dallas County Transportation Committee three times and |
|
|
currently represents southern Dallas County on the I-35 Corridor |
|
|
Advisory Committee and is the only active cofounding member of the |
|
|
Dallas Regional Mobility Coalition; in addition, he served on the |
|
|
National League of Cities' Transportation and Infrastructure |
|
|
Services Committee, and he is a frequent presenter at Irving's |
|
|
Annual Transportation and Infrastructure Summit; for his exemplary |
|
|
efforts, the Texas Transportation Commission honored him with its |
|
|
2007 Road Hand Award; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan holds bachelor's and master's |
|
|
degrees from North Texas State University, and he enjoyed a notable |
|
|
33-year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture; he has also |
|
|
worked as an adjunct professor at Dallas Baptist University; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Through his myriad contributions, Grady Smithey has |
|
|
demonstrated an outstanding commitment to making Southwest Dallas |
|
|
County an even better place in which to live and work, and in so |
|
|
doing, he has earned the deep respect and appreciation of all who |
|
|
know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Grady Smithey, Jr., on his receipt |
|
|
of the 2013 Distinguished Leadership Award from Leadership |
|
|
Southwest and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, |
|
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Smithey as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
