R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A devastating disease that can afflict anyone, |
|
regardless of gender or ethnicity, lung cancer is by far the leading |
|
cause of cancer death among both men and women; and |
|
WHEREAS, Lung cancer accounts for about 14 percent of all new |
|
cancers, and each year, more people die of lung cancer than of |
|
colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined; and |
|
WHEREAS, Overall, the risk of developing lung cancer over the |
|
course of a lifetime is about 1 in 13 for men and 1 in 16 for women; |
|
the risk is much higher than that average for smokers and is lower |
|
for nonsmokers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Cancer survival rates vary depending on the stage at |
|
which the cancer is diagnosed, and even people who receive very |
|
serious prognoses can sometimes still be cured; more than 350,000 |
|
people alive today have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some |
|
point; and |
|
WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment greatly increase |
|
chances for survival, and understanding the risk factors for lung |
|
cancer can help improve the odds of early detection; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize May 24, 2013, as Lung Cancer Awareness |
|
Day in Texas and encourage all Texans to learn about ways to reduce |
|
the prevalence of this deadly disease. |
