R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, A devastating disease that can afflict anyone,
  regardless of gender or ethnicity, lung cancer is by far the leading
  cause of cancer death among both men and women; and
         WHEREAS, Lung cancer accounts for about 14 percent of all new
  cancers, and each year, more people die of lung cancer than of
  colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined; and
         WHEREAS, Overall, the risk of developing lung cancer over the
  course of a lifetime is about 1 in 13 for men and 1 in 16 for women;
  the risk is much higher than that average for smokers and is lower
  for nonsmokers; and
         WHEREAS, Cancer survival rates vary depending on the stage at
  which the cancer is diagnosed, and even people who receive very
  serious prognoses can sometimes still be cured; more than 350,000
  people alive today have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some
  point; and
         WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment greatly increase
  chances for survival, and understanding the risk factors for lung
  cancer can help improve the odds of early detection; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize May 24, 2013, as Lung Cancer Awareness
  Day in Texas and encourage all Texans to learn about ways to reduce
  the prevalence of this deadly disease.
