R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Members of the First United Methodist Church of |
|
|
Kountze came together on May 18 and 19, 2013, to celebrate the 125th |
|
|
anniversary of their congregation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This venerable institution dates back to 1886, when |
|
|
the cornerstone was laid for its first building; the church opened |
|
|
two years later, becoming the only house of worship in Hardin |
|
|
County; at that time, the nearest church was 26 miles south, in |
|
|
Beaumont, and the Kountze sanctuary was used by all denominations |
|
|
then active in the area; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 1940, a two-story annex was added, but just nine |
|
|
years afterward, the membership had outgrown the space; |
|
|
construction began on a new church, which was completed in 1951, and |
|
|
the Family Life Center was added in 2000; today, the congregation |
|
|
consists of more than 200 members, who are led in prayer by Pastor |
|
|
Nathan Gossett; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, For 125 years, the First United Methodist Church of |
|
|
Kountze has provided steadfast spiritual and moral guidance to the |
|
|
community it serves, and its continued existence is a tribute to the |
|
|
commitment and faith of its leaders and members, past and present; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the First |
|
|
United Methodist Church of Kountze and extend to the members of the |
|
|
congregation sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
