H.R. No. 2538

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Members of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Georgetown celebrated the 140th anniversary of their church's founding on April 21, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Established in 1873, this historically black congregation has long played a vital role in the Georgetown community; members initially met in the home of Mack and Belinda Cook, who later deeded the property on Martin Luther King Street where services are still held today; the current sanctuary was built in 1972 and renovated in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, St. Paul United Methodist Church has benefited from the dedicated efforts of a number of outstanding members of the clergy, including the Reverends W. B. Lot and Edward Kernan; the church's current pastor, the Reverend Arcynthia Louie, has led the congregation for the past four years; and

WHEREAS, United by their shared faith and strong traditions, the members of this notable house of worship support a variety of commendable programs that offer fellowship as well as help to those in need; and

WHEREAS, For nearly a century and a half, countless Georgetown residents have looked to St. Paul for inspiration and spiritual guidance, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church at this special time in its rich history; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate all those associated with St. Paul United Methodist Church in Georgetown on its 140th anniversary and extend to its members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
