H.R. No. 2643

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc., one of the
foremost employers in San Antonio, is celebrating its 10-year
  anniversary in October 2013; and
WHEREAS, Since breaking ground in 2003, TMMTX has become the
sole U.S. manufacturing plant for the full-size Tundra pickup, with
the compact Tacoma pickup joining the assembly line in 2010; the
factory's annual vehicle production now totals over 200,000, and in
the fall of this year, TMMTX is expected to roll out its one
  millionth truck; and
WHEREAS, More than 6,000 Texans are employed at TMMTX's main
plant and 21 on-site suppliers, representing a considerable share
of the roughly 18,000 workers employed by Toyota statewide; during
the two periods in the past several years when production was
suspended, all team members were retained and temporarily assigned
to volunteer work in the community; moreover, the company's hiring
practices reflect a keen respect for the value of military
experience, as veterans are aggressively sought out for its
  workforce; and
WHEREAS, In addition to creating jobs and infusing capital
into the area economy, TMMTX honors a commitment to responsible
corporate citizenship in many ways; since its opening, it has
helped to improve the quality of life of community residents
through its support of the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar
County, the San Antonio Food Bank, and the San Antonio Area Chapter
of the American Red Cross, as well as such worthwhile local causes
as the San Antonio Audubon Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of
South Texas, SAMMinistries, and El Centro del Barrio; and
WHEREAS, Investments in education constitute a full 75
percent of TMMTX's donations to area groups; this year, the company
allocated $1.2 million for education initiatives and scholarships
for local high school students, allowing them to experience summer
residencies in engineering programs; other endeavors include an
initiative through which TMMTX representatives visit schools to
teach topics in automotive technology, efforts to support education
in high-demand STEM fields, and a scholarship and work-study
program administered through a partnership with Alamo Colleges; and
WHEREAS, For the better part of a decade, Toyota Motor
Manufacturing, Texas, has contributed vitally to the economic
growth and prosperity of San Antonio, and its demonstrated regard
for employee welfare and the betterment of the wider community is
indeed deserving of special commendation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby recognize Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas,
Inc., and extend to all those associated with the plant sincere best
wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
