R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud residents of Socorro celebrated the town's |
|
165th anniversary at Fiesta del Valle held in May 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, After the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 in northern New |
|
Mexico, Spaniards and their Native American allies relocated to the |
|
Socorro area, where they built the Nuestra Senora de la Limpia |
|
Concepcion del Socorro Mission; though the mission was destroyed |
|
twice by the flooding of the Rio Grande, determined settlers built a |
|
third church in 1843, and it still stands today; in 1848, after the |
|
Mexican-American War, the City of Socorro became an official Texas |
|
municipality; and |
|
WHEREAS, Socorro residents commemorated this anniversary |
|
with the biggest fiesta in east El Paso County, an event that |
|
featured music, food, a dance competition, and the largest |
|
fireworks display in the city's history; on the last night of the |
|
festival, Noche Mexicana, Socorro welcomed their featured guest, |
|
Jacob Prado, the Consul General of Mexico in El Paso, as an |
|
expression of the continuing friendship between the neighboring |
|
countries; and |
|
WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |
|
a bright and prosperous future, the people of Socorro may indeed |
|
take great pride in the important role their city has played in the |
|
story of our state and nation; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 165th anniversary of the |
|
incorporation of Socorro and extend to the city's residents sincere |
|
best wishes for the future. |
