R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Museo Urbano's receipt of a 2013 Public History
  Project award from the National Council on Public History provides
  a welcome opportunity to recognize this respected El Paso
  institution's dedication to its mission of exhibiting,
  interpreting, and reclaiming the history of the borderlands; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 2011 by the Department of History at
  The University of Texas at El Paso, Museo Urbano first opened in a
  19th-century tenement building in the heart of El Segundo Barrio,
  one of the most historically significant Mexican American
  neighborhoods in the U.S.; directed by Dr. Yolanda Chavez Leyva, an
  associate professor of history and public historian at UTEP, and
  David Dorado Romo, a scholar and doctoral candidate, the museum is
  an innovative and inspiring place where musicians, artists, and
  other members of the community can gather to reflect on and honor
  the compelling yet sometimes painful history of this region; and
         WHEREAS, A central tenet of the museum's philosophy is to
  bring its exhibits to the people; at its location on a
  pedestrian-heavy corner on South Oregon Street, visitors often
  peruse its holdings, including outdoor displays of photographs and
  banners, on their way to work or to church; its staff also offers
  walking tours, lectures, and workshops in collaboration with other
  organizations to encourage visitors to learn more about the people
  and traditions that have made this area unique; and
         WHEREAS, Founded on the values of respect, reciprocity,
  responsibility, and the advancement of social justice, the Museo
  Urbano is a vital cultural resource, and it is indeed deserving of
  special recognition for its outstanding contributions to the El
  Paso community; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Museo Urbano on its receipt of a
  2013 Public History Project award from the National Council on
  Public History and extend to its directors, staff, and volunteers
  sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the museum as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
