R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Students from Midway Middle School in Hewitt have
  earned a number of honors in the 2013 Texas History Day competition;
  and
         WHEREAS, Part of National History Day, Texas History Day is a
  yearlong program that offers students an opportunity to develop
  research and critical thinking skills while gaining deeper
  historical knowledge; students who take part in the program conduct
  research on a particular topic and then present what they have
  learned in one of a variety of forms, which range from papers,
  performances, and exhibits to documentaries and interpretive
  websites; district and regional History Day contests culminate in
  the statewide fair at the end of the school year; the theme for the
  2013 competition was "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas,
  Events"; and
         WHEREAS, At the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair, held at
  Baylor University on February 14 and 15, Midway students excelled
  in both the individual and group events; in the individual exhibit
  category, Nathaniel Morgan received first place and Henry Beard
  took second; in the group exhibit division, Will Hilliard and
  Cameron Russell took first place and also received awards from the
  Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames of
  America, while Caroline Howell, Rachel Howell, Morgan Howell, and
  Zoe Recks claimed second place and Joe Micus and Tyler Whitley
  earned honorable mention; in the historical papers division, Phoebe
  Park took second place, Ally Brown took third, and Miriam McCormick
  received honorable mention; and
         WHEREAS, Midway students garnered additional awards at the
  statewide contest, which was held at the Bob Bullock Texas State
  History Museum and at The University of Texas at Austin on May 3 and
  4; during that event, Henry Beard was singled out for
  "distinguished achievement" for his individual exhibit,
  "Gyroscopes and Apollo Three Axis of Rotational Turning," and
  Nathaniel Morgan was similarly cited for his project, "Battle of
  Little Bighorn: The Indians' Last Stand"; in the historical paper
  division, Phoebe Park earned distinguished achievement
  acknowledgment for her paper, "Kindertransport: A Turning Point in
  the British Immigration Policy as the Unprecedented Rescue
  Mission," for which she also received a Jewish History Award; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to the students' impressive
  performances, Midway teacher Leaslie Deville was honored at the
  regional contest with the Calvin B. Smith Award, which is presented
  each year to a teacher who excels in preparing students for History
  Day competition; fellow teachers Shelby Milam and Vicki Adams also
  played an essential role in helping their students attain
  recognition; and
         WHEREAS, Many hours of hard work have paid off for these
  talented young Texans and their teachers, and they are a great
  source of pride to their school and their community; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Nathaniel Morgan, Henry Beard,
  Will Hilliard, Cameron Russell, Caroline Howell, Rachel Howell,
  Morgan Howell, Zoe Recks, Joe Micus, Tyler Whitley, Phoebe Park,
  Ally Brown, and Miriam McCormick on their achievements in the 2013
  Texas History Day competition and extend to them sincere best
  wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
  for the students as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
  of Representatives.
