R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Elizabeth Deiandria Smith has demonstrated a
  notable commitment to public service as president of the Public
  Interest Law Association at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at
  Texas Southern University during the 2012-2013 school year; and
         WHEREAS, The association helps students of the TMSL focus
  their studies to gain the legal skills necessary to defend
  individual rights, advance justice, and enhance the public good; as
  president, Ms. Smith wrote and submitted a proposal for a Public
  Interest Law and Social Policy Certificate Program at the school,
  and she planned and organized the first campus-wide Volunteer
  Income Tax Assistance Program at Texas Southern University; and
         WHEREAS, The daughter of Leon and Delores Smith, Elizabeth
  Smith is a graduate of Grambling State University and Prairie View
  A&M University, and she is currently in the top 15 percent of the
  TMSL Class of 2014; she is vice president of the Student Bar
  Association, fund-raising co-chair of the Phi Alpha Delta Legal
  Honor Society, and a member of the National Black Law Student
  Association, the American and Pacific Asian Law Student
  Association, and the International Law Students Association; and
         WHEREAS, This gifted law student has served as a judicial
  clerk for the Baton Rouge City Court, as a judicial intern in the
  court of criminal appeals judge Barbara Hervey, and during the 83rd
  Texas Legislature as a policy analyst and legislative aide in the
  office of State Representative Dr. Alma Allen; she has also worked
  at the Earl Carl Institute as a student intern and as a case manager
  for the Innocence Project; and
         WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith's intelligence, drive, and
  commitment to social justice have placed her in the front ranks of
  students at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and as she
  continues her education, she is indeed building a firm foundation
  for an outstanding legal career; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Elizabeth Deiandria Smith for her
  service as the 2012-2013 president of the TMSL Public Interest Law
  Association and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
  success and a bright future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
