SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Arnold Flores
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Arnold Flores,
  who died January 7, 2013, at the age of 76; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Rio Grande City, Arnold Flores moved
  early in his life with his family to San Antonio; he married
  Gloria Santoy, and he became an employee at Kelly Air Force Base;
  during his employment, he developed an interest in issues of
  equality and politics, and he joined the Service Employees
  International Union and was active as an organizer; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Flores went on to become famous as a West Side
  labor leader and a political activist who was dedicated to
  promoting equal rights; he evolved into a grass-roots
  philosopher known for his realistic outlook, and he went on to
  serve as state director of the Service Employees International
  Union; and
         WHEREAS, A pioneer in organizing Hispanic and other
  minority neighborhoods, Arnold Flores became a well-known leader
  in the civil and voting rights movements that reshaped San
  Antonio and much of the Southwest; he was a founding board member
  of the National Council of La Raza and a board member of the
  Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Flores was a hard worker throughout his life,
  and he gave unselfishly of his time to others; he was devoted to
  his family and was noted for his engaging personality and sense
  of humor; and
         WHEREAS, Arnold Flores was respected by citizens across
  the state for his integrity and courage and for his exceptional
  accomplishments; he was beloved by many, and he will be greatly
  missed by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Arnold Flores; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
  so in memory of Arnold Flores.
