SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 56

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign on the occasion of its 10th National Wear Red Day; and

WHEREAS, Targeting females at risk for heart disease, the Go Red for Women movement emerged 10 years ago and has helped to spare the lives of some 627,000 women and taught countless others to heed the dangers of heart disease; and

WHEREAS, National Wear Red Day reminds women that heart disease is the most common cause of death among American women and that awareness and proactive risk reduction are the primary safeguards against this insidious disease; and

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease causes one in three deaths among women each year; it is an equal-opportunity threat that affects an estimated 43 million women in the United States; since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease and the gender gap in survival rates continues to widen; and

WHEREAS, National Wear Red Day is an important initiative in the effort to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease among women in this country; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign on its outstanding efforts to improve cardiovascular health among women and extend best wishes for a successful and productive 10th National Wear Red Day; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to commemorate this special day.
