SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez, Jr.
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  residents of Del Rio in mourning the loss of Dr. Alfredo
  Gutierrez, Jr., who died April 24, 2012, at the age of 80; and
         WHEREAS, A leading figure in the community, Dr. Gutierrez
  spent many of his eight decades serving the citizens of Del Rio as
  both a physician and the city's mayor; and
         WHEREAS, Born February 15, 1932, to supportive and
  nurturing parents, Dr. Gutierrez grew up to be an excellent
  student and innovative thinker; he graduated from San Felipe High
  School as a co-salutatorian of his class and later excelled in
  The University of Texas at Austin Honors Program; and
         WHEREAS, After teaching high school for two years, he went
  on to earn a doctor of medicine degree from The University of
  Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; and
         WHEREAS, A South Texan with deep ties to Del Rio, Dr.
  Gutierrez and his wife, Olga, returned to his beloved hometown,
  where he established a medical clinic; over the next 50 years,
  he would deliver some 5,000 babies, perform general surgeries,
  and serve as the team doctor for the San Felipe Mustangs and the
  Del Rio Rams; and
         WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, this compassionate young
  leader entered politics; as the region simmered with civil
  unrest, Dr. Gutierrez ran for mayor of Del Rio and became the
  first Hispanic to hold that office, as well as the youngest;
  altogether, he would serve for 20 years as mayor; and
         WHEREAS, This extraordinary citizen and public servant
  accomplished much during his lifetime; he helped consolidate the
  Del Rio school systems, and he dramatically improved the city's
  parks and infrastructure systems; and
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, warmth, and wisdom, Dr.
  Gutierrez gave generously to others, and he leaves behind
  memories that will be forever cherished by his family and
  countless friends; now, therefore be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez, Jr.; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Alfredo Gutierrez.
