SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 182

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the Texas Historical Commission in recognizing Big Red, Incorporated, which has been named a recipient of the Texas Treasure Business Award; and

WHEREAS, This prestigious award honors companies that have been in continuous and substantially similar independent operation in the state for at least 50 years with an uninterrupted employment history and good standing with the state; and

WHEREAS, Big Red, Incorporated, traces its roots to a company founded in Waco in 1937 by Grover Thomsen, R. H. Roark, and R. T. Roark, who had created the extracts for a soft drink known as Sun Tang Red Cream Soda; the name was changed to Big Red in 1969; and

WHEREAS, Today, Big Red is marketed across the country and is the sixth-largest soft drink company in the nation; through the years, the firm has sponsored a wide variety of charitable and civic activities, including the Children's Miracle Network, scholarship funds, and high school rodeos; and

WHEREAS, The success of Big Red, Incorporated, has played an important role in the growth and progress of our state, and it is truly fitting that this exceptional enterprise be recognized for its resilience, its longevity, and its many outstanding contributions to the community it serves; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Big Red, Incorporated, on receiving the Texas Treasure Business Award and extend best wishes for continued success; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the company as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
