SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 242

James Moore West |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Fort Worth in mourning the loss of James Moore West, |
|
who died January 25, 2013, at the age of 89; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. West was a man of diverse interests and |
|
accomplishments; he loved travel and literature and had a passion |
|
for both the humanities and the sciences, with an affinity for |
|
engineering that served him exceedingly well throughout his |
|
life; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Born July 12, 1923, Mr. West attended Paschal High |
|
School in Fort Worth and The Citadel Military Academy, but his |
|
college studies were interrupted by the outbreak of war; he |
|
enlisted in the United States Army and attained a commission as |
|
an infantry officer, and in 1945 he married his childhood |
|
sweetheart, Pauline, in Fort Worth before leaving for overseas |
|
service; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After serving admirably in World War II, Mr. West |
|
returned home and earned a civil engineering degree from The |
|
University of Texas at Austin; he was soon hired by Standard Oil |
|
of California, and over the next 36 years lived in Colorado, |
|
Louisiana, and Texas and traveled extensively for the company; he |
|
was also awarded two patents for pipeline designs that are still |
|
used worldwide; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Upon his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. West undertook |
|
many travels together; they enjoyed hiking trips in New Zealand, |
|
driving jaunts through Europe, and various ocean cruises in their |
|
later years; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Inseparable and devoted, James and Pauline West |
|
shared 68 years of life and love; they raised two children, |
|
Thomas and Josephine, and took great pride in their extended |
|
family; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. West was an innovative and creative man who |
|
loved to design and tinker; a licensed amateur radio operator who |
|
built his own ham radio and a color television set, he also had a |
|
strong interest in aviation and obtained his private pilot's |
|
license, built his own airplane, and logged more than 1,000 miles |
|
in the air over the course of a lifetime; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. West was known for his fine memory, his sharp |
|
wit, and his warmth and wisdom; he will be deeply missed, and his |
|
family and friends will forever cherish the time they shared; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of James Moore West; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
them as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, |
|
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of |
|
James West. |
