SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 250
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Andrews County and Texans across the state in
  celebrating February 20, 2013, as Andrews County Day at the State
  Capitol; and
         WHEREAS, Situated on the high plains of the Permian Basin,
  Andrews County was established in 1876 and formally organized in
  1910 with Andrews as its county seat; it is named for Richard
  Andrews, an early settler and soldier in the revolutionary army
  and the first man to die in the Texas War for Independence in
  1835; and
         WHEREAS, Andrews County has long been a leader in the
  ranching industry in Texas; the county also became an important
  source of cotton and sorghum with the advent of the widespread
  use of windmills; it experienced an impressive oil boom during
  the 1940s and has recently experienced the greatest period of
  growth and development in its history; as the fastest-growing
  micropolitan area in Texas, it remains one of the state's leading
  producers of oil and gas, having just produced its three
  billionth barrel of oil since 1929; and
         WHEREAS, With unprecedented support from the citizens,
  elected representatives, and civic organizations of the area,
  Andrews County hosts the most advanced secure facility for the
  disposal of Class A, B, and C low-level radioactive waste in the
  United States; and
         WHEREAS, The Andrews Independent School District is noted for
  academic excellence, with its teams having earned top honors at
  numerous University Interscholastic League academic competitions; and
         WHEREAS, The Andrews High School girls' golf team is the
  two-time defending 3A state champion, and both the boys' and
  girls' golf teams are currently ranked number one in their
  conference; and
         WHEREAS, The people of Andrews County enjoy an abundance of
  recreational opportunities, including the Andrews County Golf
  Course and many exemplary area parks; the county boasts an annual
  bluegrass festival, and the Andrews Art Guild Show provides a
  forum for artists to display their works; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  83rd Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Andrews County
  on their many contributions to the rich history of our state and
  extend to them best wishes for a memorable Andrews County Day at
  the State Capitol; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this special day.
