SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 269
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the members of the Dallas-Fort Worth Alliance of Trio
  Programs on the occasion of National Trio Day, which is being
  celebrated with weeklong activities from February 18 through
  February 23, 2013; and
         WHEREAS, The celebration week concludes with a
  collaborative event taking place on the campus of The University
  of Texas at Arlington; the event is designed to share information
  and to inform the community about the success of Trio Programs in
  the Dallas-Fort Worth area; and
         WHEREAS, Trio Programs is a set of federally funded college
  opportunity programs established by Congress to help low-income
  Americans enter college, graduate, and move forward with their
  chosen paths; funded by Title IV of the Higher Education Act of
  1965, the programs help students to overcome class, social, and
  cultural barriers to higher education; and
         WHEREAS, The programs currently serve nearly 800,000
  low-income students, and more than 1,000 colleges, universities,
  community colleges, and agencies now offer Trio Programs in the
  United States, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands; and
         WHEREAS, The institutions and organizations in the
  Dallas-Fort Worth area that participate in the Trio Programs are
  providing much needed support services for disadvantaged and
  underprivileged students and have helped to bridge the gap in
  educational levels between the highest-income and lowest-income
  students; and
         WHEREAS, Numerous representatives from colleges,
  universities, and community programs and organizations are
  participating in the Dallas-Fort Worth Alliance National Trio
  Day Celebration on February 23; the celebration includes
  informative presentations about college access and a rally in
  commemoration of the many successes of the Trio Programs; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  83rd Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Dallas-Fort
  Worth Alliance of Trio Programs on the invaluable support and
  assistance they offer disadvantaged students and proclaim
  February 23, 2013, National Trio Day in Texas; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of National Trio Day.
