SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 324
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize the American YouthWorks AmeriCorps volunteers who |
|
|
served in Bastrop County in the aftermath of the 2011 wildfires; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, These exceptional volunteers came together to |
|
|
help provide relief for those affected by the devastating fires; |
|
|
AmeriCorps members registered nearly 1,000 survivors for |
|
|
assisted cleanup, and more than 4,000 volunteers came through the |
|
|
doors of the organization's Volunteer Reception Center; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The AmeriCorps volunteers came from two American |
|
|
YouthWorks programs, the Texas Conservation Corps and Casa Verde |
|
|
Builders, and they provided invaluable aid in helping to restore |
|
|
and rebuild Bastrop State Park; they felled hazardous trees, |
|
|
rebuilt damaged bridges, restored hiking trails, and worked with |
|
|
community members on erosion control projects; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Volunteers also worked on private property that |
|
|
had suffered severe wildfire damage and was posing a risk to |
|
|
public infrastructure; they helped to plant 190 acres with native |
|
|
seed to replace lost vegetation and minimize the impact of soil |
|
|
erosion on the community; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, nearly a year and a half after the fires, |
|
|
American YouthWorks programs continue to play an important role |
|
|
in restoring the areas affected by the fire, and they are truly |
|
|
deserving of recognition for their exemplary efforts; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
83rd Legislature, hereby commend the American YouthWorks |
|
|
AmeriCorps volunteers on their indispensable work in Bastrop |
|
|
County following the devastating Labor Day wildfires and extend |
|
|
to them best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
|
honor of the service of these dedicated young people. |
