Althea Lewis Renfro |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
|
citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of Althea Lewis Renfro, |
|
|
who died December 27, 2012, at the age of 85; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Althea Lewis was born February 10, 1927, in |
|
|
Houston; a 1942 graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School, she |
|
|
earned a bachelor's degree from Houston College for Negroes and a |
|
|
master's degree from Texas Southern University; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She married Porter Renfro, Jr., and she enjoyed a |
|
|
long and fulfilling career as an educator; she was a teacher at |
|
|
Crawford and Hohl Elementary Schools in the Houston Independent |
|
|
School District for more than 37 years and she was active in a |
|
|
number of professional and civic organizations; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her |
|
|
daily life, she served as a church musician for over 30 years at |
|
|
Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church and Zion Hill Missionary |
|
|
Baptist Church; she was also a prolific poet whose work included |
|
|
the lyrics to the gospel song "Use Your Faith"; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A woman of courage and compassion, she gave |
|
|
generously to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel |
|
|
will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her |
|
|
life; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
|
|
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
|
|
her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
|
bereaved family of Althea Lewis Renfro; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the |
|
|
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do |
|
|
so in memory of Althea Renfro. |
