SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 383
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Nancy Flake
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of noted journalist Nancy Flake, who died
  February 12, 2013, at the age of 56; and
         WHEREAS, Nancy Flake was born May 10, 1956, in Oklahoma;
  throughout her life, she continued to celebrate her ties to her
  home state by rooting for the Oklahoma Sooners football team; and
         WHEREAS, She joined the staff of the Courier, a product of
  the Houston Community Newspapers, in 1997 as an advertorial
  writer and restaurant critic; she quickly rose to the position of
  news reporter and developed a reputation for persistence and
  resolve; she covered the local news of Montgomery County as well
  as state politics and their effect on the area; and
         WHEREAS, Known for her professionalism, her unmatched work
  ethic, and her determination to give a thorough and balanced view
  of the news, she was particularly drawn to education coverage;
  she received the Alafair Hammett Media Award from the Association
  of Texas Professional Educators for her outstanding work
  promoting public education in the state; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to her work as a reporter, she served
  the Courier as city editor and eventually became the newspaper's
  managing editor; she was honored by the Texas Associated Press
  Managing Editors for her feature story of a local high school
  graduate who had set records in the United States Air Force for
  refueling troop transport and cargo planes; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
  gave unselfishly to others, and her sense of humor and her
  enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
  forgotten; and
         WHEREAS, She was a devoted mother to her sons, Mason and
  Martin, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever
  by her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Nancy Flake; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
  so in memory of Nancy Flake.
