Mary Margaret Farabee |
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Mary Margaret Farabee, |
|
who died March 3, 2013, at the age of 73; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of Dallas, Mrs. Farabee attended The |
|
University of Texas at Austin, where her student activities |
|
ranged from membership in the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority to |
|
participation in protests against racial discrimination; she |
|
graduated with honors in 1961; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After her graduation, she took a job at the Austin |
|
State Hospital, where she met her first husband, Dr. James |
|
Albright; she later returned to The University of Texas and |
|
earned a master's degree in American Studies before working at a |
|
variety of jobs, including positions with the Texas State |
|
Historical Association and the Texas Senate; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She went on to serve as director of volunteer |
|
services at Seton Hospital, senior vice president at United Bank, |
|
and vice president for development at KLRU-TV; she married former |
|
state senator Ray Farabee in 1991, and the couple created a home |
|
together filled with books and art; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Farabee had throughout her life been active |
|
as a volunteer, spearheading the restoration of the Paramount |
|
Theater and playing a vital role in the commissioning of |
|
Philosophers' Rock, but beginning in 1991, she made volunteerism |
|
a full-time calling; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Farabee joined Texas First Lady Laura Bush to |
|
cofound the Texas Book Festival, and she chaired its board of |
|
directors for eight years; she was a passionate supporter of the |
|
Texas Observer and played an important part in the creation of |
|
the magazine's Molly National Journalism Prize, named in honor of |
|
the late Molly Ivins; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She served on the boards of numerous |
|
organizations, including the University of Texas Press, the |
|
People's Community Clinic, the Ann Richards School for Young |
|
Women Leaders, and the Dell Children's Blood and Cancer Center; |
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Farabee was a woman of compassion, grace, and |
|
generosity whose sense of adventure and enthusiasm for living |
|
each day to the fullest were an inspiration to all those who were |
|
privileged to share in her life; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she |
|
leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her |
|
family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of Mary Margaret Farabee; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the |
|
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do |
|
so in memory of Mary Margaret Farabee. |
