SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 624
WHEREAS, The year 2013 marks the 75th anniversary of the
incorporation of College Station, an occasion that provides a
welcome opportunity to pay tribute to the heritage and
achievements of this uniquely Texan city; and
WHEREAS, The community of College Station traces its roots
to the founding of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of
Texas, now known as Texas A&M University, in 1876; because of the
area's isolation from nearby towns, the school administration
provided students and faculty with housing and facilities, and a
community centered around the campus began to develop; in 1877
area residents acquired a post office, which was designated
"College Station," in reference to the Southern Pacific train
depot located west of the campus; and
WHEREAS, Some six decades later, the community had grown to
such an extent that the establishment of a municipal government
seemed to many to be desirable; the college's board of governors
concurred, and on October 19, 1938, College Station was
incorporated by an overwhelming vote of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, Today, College Station is home to more than 97,000
residents, who embody the spirit and sense of tradition that
characterize the nation's most vibrant college towns; situated
within the boundaries of Stephen F. Austin's second colony, the
city boasts an array of historic, artistic, and cultural sites,
including the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and it
is one of only two cities in the country with nationally
accredited parks and recreation, public works, water, and police
departments; moreover, in both 2010 and 2011, the College
Station-Bryan area was named the fourth-best-performing small
metropolitan area by the Milken Institute, and it has
consistently been recognized as an attractive location for
  businesses, families, and retirees; and
WHEREAS, During this milestone year, residents of College
Station may reflect with pride on their city's proud history and
numerous amenities, as well as on the many contributions that
they and their forebears have made to the culture and prosperity
of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
Legislature, hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of the
incorporation of College Station and extend to its citizens
sincere best wishes for a memorable celebration.
