SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 699
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize the Baylor University men's basketball team, which |
|
|
recently won the 2013 National Invitational Tournament; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Bears became the first Big 12 team to win this |
|
|
prestigious title by defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes by a score of |
|
|
74-54 at Madison Square Garden in a game that saw them shoot 54 |
|
|
percent from the field while holding the Hawkeyes to 26 percent |
|
|
shooting; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, These young athletes have demonstrated great |
|
|
talent and perseverance over the course of the year, finishing |
|
|
the season with a record of 23-14, the school's fifth 20-win |
|
|
season in the last six years; team members Isaiah Austin, Deuce |
|
|
Bello, Gary Franklin, Rico Gathers, Brady Heslip, Pierre |
|
|
Jackson, Cory Jefferson, Logan Lowery, Jacob Neubert, Taurean |
|
|
Prince, L. J. Rose, Chad Rykhoek, and A. J. Walton can all take |
|
|
great pride in their outstanding performance; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Under the superior leadership and expertise of |
|
|
head coach Scott Drew, and with the support of assistant coaches |
|
|
Jerome Tang, Grant McCasland, and Paul Mills, the Bears have |
|
|
developed outstanding teamwork and discipline and have achieved |
|
|
a 15-3 postseason record over the last five years; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Baylor University, the people of Waco, and Texans |
|
|
across the state are proud of the Bears for their exceptional |
|
|
skills, their hard work, and their fine sportsmanship; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the Baylor University men's |
|
|
basketball team on its successful season and extend |
|
|
congratulations to team members on winning the 2013 National |
|
|
Invitational Tournament; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
