SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 702
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in |
|
|
recognizing the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas on the |
|
|
occasion of its 10th annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, which |
|
|
takes place on April 23, 2013; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas was |
|
|
founded in 2001 in an effort to reduce the trend of low adult |
|
|
literacy in the area; the coalition supports a network of more |
|
|
than 50 nonprofit agencies that provide a range of literacy |
|
|
programming in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson |
|
|
Counties; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The services provided by these partner agencies |
|
|
and supported by the coalition include courses in adult basic |
|
|
literacy, English as a Second Language, and preparation for the |
|
|
General Educational Development test; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas has the |
|
|
commendable goal of helping to create a region in which 100 |
|
|
percent of the population is literate, employable, and engaged; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee has become |
|
|
a vital fund-raiser for the coalition; the proceeds from this |
|
|
popular event help the organization achieve its mission of |
|
|
improving the quality and increasing the availability of |
|
|
literacy instruction for Central Texans; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Education and opportunity are closely linked in |
|
|
today's society; it is important that regional and national |
|
|
literacy organizations receive the support of their communities, |
|
|
so that they may help to create a better future for all Americans; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the Literacy Coalition of Central |
|
|
Texas and extend to its members sincere best wishes for the 10th |
|
|
anniversary Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
|
honor of this outstanding organization as an expression of high |
|
|
regard from the Texas Senate. |
