SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 780
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
join the Texas Partners for Adult Protective Services in |
|
|
recognizing May of 2013 as Elder Abuse Prevention Month; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Individuals who are elderly or who have |
|
|
disabilities have contributed greatly to the general welfare of |
|
|
the State of Texas and have helped to preserve the customs, |
|
|
convictions, traditions, and perspectives of a diverse |
|
|
population; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, These vital and valued members of our society have |
|
|
shared their wisdom and experience and have enriched the lives of |
|
|
many, but sadly, abuse of the elderly and of people with |
|
|
disabilities is an all-too-common problem that affects hundreds |
|
|
of thousands of people across the country; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In the year 2012 alone, abuse affected more than |
|
|
57,000 Texans who are elderly or who are particularly vulnerable; |
|
|
elder abuse happens to men and women of all income levels and of |
|
|
all cultural and ethnic groups, whether they are in good health |
|
|
or are incapacitated in some way; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Self-neglect is involved in many of the cases |
|
|
investigated by Adult Protective Services in Texas, and it is our |
|
|
collective duty as citizens to reach out to those people in need; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The observance of Elder Abuse Prevention Month |
|
|
helps to raise awareness about the need to protect older adults |
|
|
and persons with disabilities from abuse, neglect, and |
|
|
exploitation, and it is fitting that a month be dedicated to |
|
|
supporting such a critical mission; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby designate May of 2013 as Elder Abuse |
|
|
Prevention Month; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared by the |
|
|
Texas Senate in tribute to this solemn occasion. |
