SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 825
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of the late United States Marine Corps
  General Oliver Prince Smith; and
         WHEREAS, Oliver Prince Smith was born October 26, 1893; he
  was a highly decorated combat veteran of World War II who took
  part in numerous actions in the Pacific theater, including the
  Cape Gloucester and Peleliu operations; and
         WHEREAS, He earned great renown as commander of the 1st
  Marine Division during the Korean War, notably for his command of
  the division during the Inchon landing and for his actions prior
  to and during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir; and
         WHEREAS, General Smith and his 1st Marine Division, while
  dealing with subzero temperatures, established supply points and
  an airfield along the route to the Battle of Chosin Reservoir;
  after the division was surrounded by vastly superior numbers at
  Chosin, he directed the breakout and subsequent march to the
  coast and earned the enduring respect and admiration of his
  fellow Marines; and
         WHEREAS, Over the course of his illustrious career,
  General Smith won numerous medals and commendations, including
  the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Legion
  of Merit with Combat "V" and oak leaf cluster; he played a vital
  role in the success of American military action in the Korean
  War, and it is truly fitting that he be recognized for his
  invaluable contributions to the war effort and to the United
  States Marine Corps; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of General
  Oliver Prince Smith; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of his outstanding contributions to the nation.
