SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 833
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Ruth McLean
  Bowman Bowers, who died April 19, 2013; and
 
         WHEREAS, Ruth McLean was born in 1920 to Verna and Marrs
  McLean; she spent her childhood in Beaumont and moved with her
  family to San Antonio in the 1930s; she was a graduate of Saint
  Mary's Hall in San Antonio and Finch College in New York City; she
  was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack T. Bowman and William
  O. Bowers; and
 
         WHEREAS, Throughout her life, she devoted her time and
  energy to community, philanthropic, social, and political
  affairs, and she was particularly committed to education and to
  women's issues; and
 
         WHEREAS, She served on the boards of Texas Woman's
  University, Trinity University, and Saint Mary's Hall; she
  endowed the Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers Chair for Breast Cancer
  Research and Treatment and the cyclotron wing of the Research
  Imaging Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center;
  the Baylor College of Medicine has a professorship in her name,
  and she funded the university's annual Excellence in Research
  Award; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Bowers served on the board of the National
  Abortion Rights Action League, and she helped finance the
  landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case; she was an invaluable
  supporter of the Family Violence Prevention Service and the
  Battered Women's Shelter, and she was named Woman of the Year in
  1990 by the Texas Women's Political Caucus; and
 
         WHEREAS, Other institutes and organizations to which she
  gave her support were the Witte Museum, the McNay Art Museum, the
  Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, the National Association for the
  Advancement of Colored People, the United Way, and the Texas
  Nature Conservancy; she received numerous awards for her
  generosity, including the Spirit of Philanthropy Award and the
  Saint Mary's Hall Founder's Day Award; and
 
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
  gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued
  counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and
 
         WHEREAS, She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she
  leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her
  family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers.
