SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 850

Bannister Luther DeBerry |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
|
commemorates the life of Bannister Luther DeBerry, who died |
|
|
November 10, 2011, at the age of 97; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Luther DeBerry was born May 7, 1914, in Bogata, |
|
|
Texas; he married his wife of 63 years, the late Pauline Allen |
|
|
DeBerry, on Christmas Day in 1937, and the couple raised a |
|
|
daughter, Nancy, who was a source of much pride and joy; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. DeBerry earned a degree in civil engineering |
|
|
from The University of Texas at Austin in 1937 and soon began a |
|
|
long and productive career with the Texas Department of |
|
|
Transportation; he took a leave of absence to serve the nation |
|
|
with the United States Corps of Engineers and the United States |
|
|
Navy during World War II; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. DeBerry returned to state |
|
|
service and held a series of increasingly responsible positions, |
|
|
culminating in his being named State Highway Engineer in 1973; he |
|
|
received numerous accolades over the course of his career, |
|
|
including the Thomas H. McDonald Memorial Award, the George |
|
|
Bartlett Award, and induction into the Hall of Honor at the Texas |
|
|
Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He was a man of courage, generosity, and strength, |
|
|
and his wisdom, his dedication, and his enthusiasm for living |
|
|
each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by his family and |
|
|
friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
|
family of Bannister Luther DeBerry; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
|
memory of Bannister Luther DeBerry. |
