SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 869
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
  pleasure in recognizing Joseph D. Jamail, Jr., for his many
  charitable works; and
         WHEREAS, This legendary lawyer from Houston has made
  international headlines with his historic courtroom victories,
  but his generosity and his tireless advocacy for the underserved
  have also made him a Lone Star State hero; and
         WHEREAS, The son of a grocer, Joe Jamail has kept close in
  his mind and heart the average Texan's struggle for justice and
  opportunity; with the help of his late wife and college
  sweetheart, Lee, he has given more than $230 million to charities
  and scholarships over the past 30 years; and
         WHEREAS, One of the most prominent beneficiaries of his
  largesse is The University of Texas at Austin, where Joe Jamail
  attended undergraduate school and law school; and
         WHEREAS, The university's campus abounds with fine
  examples of his giving, including the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas
  Swimming Center, Joe Jamail Field at Darrell K Royal Memorial
  Stadium, the Joseph D. Jamail Center for Legal Research, the Lee
  Hage Jamail Academic Room, and the centennial chair in law; and
         WHEREAS, Because of scholarships created by the Jamail
  family, 4,000 students have attended the university, and one in
  three graduate nursing students are recipients of scholarships
  endowed by the family; the Jamails have also donated to Rice
  University and Texas Southern University; and
         WHEREAS, A proud native Texan, Joe Jamail epitomizes the
  notion of giving back; over the past three decades, he has used
  his resources to improve the plight of those who are struggling
  and to elevate the efforts of those who are fighting for a better
  world; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  83rd Legislature, hereby commend Joseph D. Jamail, Jr., for his
  immeasurable contributions to our state; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of highest esteem from the Texas Senate.
