SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 870
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the citizens of Van Zandt County in celebrating the county's
  165th anniversary; and
 
         WHEREAS, Van Zandt County was organized on March 20, 1848; it
  is named for Isaac Van Zandt who was appointed chargé d'affaires to
  the United States by President Sam Houston and played an important
  role in helping Texas to achieve statehood; and
 
         WHEREAS, Located in Northeast Texas, the county was
  originally populated by the Caddo Confederacy, a Native American
  alliance that occupied an area stretching from the Ouachita River
  of Arkansas and Louisiana in the east to the Trinity River in the
  west; and
 
         WHEREAS, Today, Van Zandt County is home to some 53,000
  residents; its thriving economy is based on a diverse combination
  of tourism, oil, agriculture, and salt mining; residents and
  visitors alike enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities, arts
  and music festivals, and museums; and
 
         WHEREAS, The people of Van Zandt County are confidently
  facing the future while continuing to celebrate their rich and
  colorful past; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Van Zandt County on
  their many contributions to the growth and prosperity of our
  state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable 165th
  anniversary celebration; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
