SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 981
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the National Stroke Association and Texans across the state
  in observing May as Stroke Awareness Month; and
         WHEREAS, Stroke is a prevalent cardiovascular disease that
  imposes a tremendous cost on victims and their families, the
  health care system, and society at large; it is the
  fourth-leading cause of death in the United States and a
  principal cause of long-term adult disability; and
         WHEREAS, The total cost of cardiovascular diseases in the
  United States was estimated by the Centers for Disease Control
  and Prevention to be $444 billion in 2010; as the country's
  population ages, this figure is likely to increase even
  further; and
         WHEREAS, Public awareness and education about how to prevent
  stroke and how to recognize and respond to the symptoms of stroke
  are key factors in reducing the prevalence of stroke; and
         WHEREAS, It is appropriate that a month be set aside to
  raise awareness about this important issue and to encourage
  cooperative efforts to find solutions to the problems posed by
  this debilitating disease; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend the National Stroke Association on
  its exemplary efforts to educate the public on the risks and
  consequences of stroke and extend to its members and supporters
  best wishes for a productive Stroke Awareness Month; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this special occasion.
