Mary Denman |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Mary Denman, who |
|
died May 8, 2013, at the age of 90; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mary Denman was a pioneer among women in |
|
broadcasting; her determination to have her voice heard in a |
|
male-dominated world and her fearless advocacy for women's |
|
rights served as an inspiration to countless people; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Born June 28, 1922, she began her career in |
|
broadcasting when she served as the host of the television |
|
program Toyland Time on KVDO in the early 1950s; at the time, she |
|
was the first woman to appear on television in Corpus Christi; |
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After moving to San Antonio, she became the first |
|
woman to coanchor a news broadcast on KENS-TV, where she also |
|
hosted Our Town, a weekday interview program; she went on to |
|
focus her efforts on radio and joined WOAI as the producer and |
|
host of such programs as Morning Magazine and Prime Plus; she and |
|
her husband later formed an advertising agency, which they |
|
managed together until his death in 1991; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She received numerous awards and accolades over |
|
the course of her career, including the National Achievement |
|
Award and Broadcaster of the Year from American Women in Radio |
|
and Television; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was also active in the San Antonio theater |
|
scene; she was a longtime board member of the San Pedro Playhouse |
|
and played an important role in the campaign that raised more |
|
than $1 million for the theater's renovation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
|
gave unselfishly to others, and her generous spirit and her |
|
enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be |
|
forgotten; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and mother, and she leaves |
|
behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and |
|
countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of Mary Denman; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Mary Denman. |
