SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1006
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Mary Denman
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Mary Denman, who
  died May 8, 2013, at the age of 90; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mary Denman was a pioneer among women in
  broadcasting; her determination to have her voice heard in a
  male-dominated world and her fearless advocacy for women's
  rights served as an inspiration to countless people; and
 
         WHEREAS, Born June 28, 1922, she began her career in
  broadcasting when she served as the host of the television
  program Toyland Time on KVDO in the early 1950s; at the time, she
  was the first woman to appear on television in Corpus Christi;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, After moving to San Antonio, she became the first
  woman to coanchor a news broadcast on KENS-TV, where she also
  hosted Our Town, a weekday interview program; she went on to
  focus her efforts on radio and joined WOAI as the producer and
  host of such programs as Morning Magazine and Prime Plus; she and
  her husband later formed an advertising agency, which they
  managed together until his death in 1991; and
 
         WHEREAS, She received numerous awards and accolades over
  the course of her career, including the National Achievement
  Award and Broadcaster of the Year from American Women in Radio
  and Television; and
 
         WHEREAS, She was also active in the San Antonio theater
  scene; she was a longtime board member of the San Pedro Playhouse
  and played an important role in the campaign that raised more
  than $1 million for the theater's renovation; and
 
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
  gave unselfishly to others, and her generous spirit and her
  enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
  forgotten; and
 
         WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and mother, and she leaves
  behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and
  countless friends; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Mary Denman; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Mary Denman.
