SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1050
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Shirley Ison-Newsome on the occasion of her retirement
  as Division 4 assistant superintendent of the Dallas Independent
  School District; and
         WHEREAS, An esteemed leader in the field of public
  education for the past 40 years, Shirley Ison-Newsome has devoted
  her career to developing first-rate educational opportunities
  for young people and to improving low-performance schools, and
  she has helped to create a blend of programs, practices, and
  procedures that will long ensure Dallas students receive the best
  education possible; and
         WHEREAS, Shirley Ison-Newsome grew up in Louisville,
  Kentucky, where she was among the first African Americans to
  attend integrated schools; later, she earned three college
  degrees and went on to forge a stellar career with the Dallas
  Independent School District and receive numerous awards for her
  outstanding work as an educator; and
         WHEREAS, Shirley Ison-Newsome arrived in Dallas in 1971 as
  part of a team of consultants led by a noted national educator;
  that initial opportunity gave rise to her remarkable career in
  Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, she has had a profound impact on
  the lives of thousands of students; she has served as a teacher, a
  principal, and a dean of instruction and as a high-ranking
  administrator whose roles have included area superintendent and
  Dallas Independent School District chief of staff; and
         WHEREAS, As a tribute to her accomplishments, Shirley
  Ison-Newsome has received the Texas Governor's Excellence in
  Academic Achievement Award and the International Reading
  Association's Celebrate Literacy Award for Exemplary Service,
  among other honors; she is indeed deserving of high praise for
  her exceptional contributions to public education in Dallas;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend Shirley Ison-Newsome on her 40 years
  of outstanding service to the Dallas Independent School District
  and extend to her best wishes for the retirement years ahead;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate.
