LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 83RD LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

February 22, 2013

TO:
Honorable Rodney Ellis, Chair, Senate Committee On Open Government

FROM:
Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB279 by Watson (Relating to certain information about high-value data sets provided by state agencies to the Department of Information Resources.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code, Section 2054 to require that state agencies posting high value data sets to their agency websites provide to the Department of Information Resources (DIR) a description of and link to the data set, and DIR is then required to post it on the state internet portal. A sample of seven agencies including DIR, the General Land Office (GLO), the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), the Historical Commision, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and the Texas Lottery Commission indicate that any costs associated with the bill could be absorbed within the agency’s existing resources.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
