The bill amends the Education Code relating to an intercollegiate athletics fee at Prairie View A&M University. Under provisions of the bill, Prairie View A&M University would be authorized to charge students an intercollegiate athletics fee of $12.60 per semester credit hour. Provisions of the bill allow that if certain conditions are met, the fee may exceed $12.60. The bill changes the expiration date of the fee authorization to September 1, 2018 unless certain conditions are met by the end of the 2017-2018 academic year.
Under current law, the fee may not exceed $10 per semester credit hour. It is assumed that the fee will continue to be charged in the future due to certain conditions being met by the institution and Texas A&M University System estimates that if the fee was collected at $12.60 per semester credit hour, the fee would generate additional revenue in the amount of $500,000 per fiscal year over current amounts.
