FROM: | Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board |
IN RE: | SB1263 by Taylor (Relating to allowing parents to petition for repurposing, alternative management, or closure of certain public school campuses.), As Engrossed |
The bill would amend the Education Code to allow parents to petition for repurposing, alternative management, or closure of certain public school campuses. The bill would require the commissioner to develop and make available a petition for parents or guardians of students who attended a campus that had been rated as unacceptable for three consecutive years. The bill would require a campus that had been ordered to be repurposed or have alternative management to remain part of the school district in which the campus was included prior to these actions.
The Texas Education Agency indicates that the duties and responsibilities associated with implementing the provision of the bill could be accomplished by utilizing existing resources. The bill would become effective immediately upon approval by the appropriate voting majorities, or on September 1, 2013.
