LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 83RD LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 10, 2013

TO:
Honorable John Whitmire, Chair, Senate Committee on Criminal Justice

FROM:
Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB1839 by Whitmire (Relating to the detention of certain juvenile offenders. ), Committee Report 1st House, Substituted

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would require jail staff to supervise a child while incidental contact between the child and a detained adult at the facility is possible. The bill would also repeal Section 51.12(g), Family Code, which would no longer require jails to have separate detention staff for children.

Local Government Impact

The bill would result in cost savings to county jails; however, savings are not anticipated to be significant.
