AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

Currently, several states that have Route 66 in their respective geographic boundaries have designated their portion of the highway as an official "state historic corridor." No such designation currently exists for Route 66 in Texas. H.B. 978 designates the segment of the highway as the "Route 66 Historic Corridor" in order to promote tourism in Texas communities along Route 66.

H.B. 978 amends current law the designate the Route 66 Historic Corridor.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1. Amends Subchapter A, Chapter 442, Government Code, by adding Section 442.030, as follows:

Sec. 442.030. ROUTE 66 HISTORIC CORRIDOR. (a) Requires the Texas Historical Commission (commission) to identify relevant segments of former U.S. Highway 66 located in this state that are still in use and designate those segments as a historic corridor.

(b) Requires the historic corridor designated by the commission to be known as the Route 66 Historic Corridor.

SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2015.
