AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

S.B. 961 recognizes February 19 as Iwo Jima Day, in memory of the courageous men and women of the United States armed forces who participated in the successful capture of the island of Iwo Jima beginning February 19, 1945.

Victory at Iwo Jima came with a cost. It is remembered as one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, lasting more than a month and costing the lives of more than 7,000 Americans.

S.B. 961 provides that Iwo Jima Day may be regularly observed through activities, but makes no requirements on public schools or other entities.

S.B. 961 amends current law relating to the designation of February 19 as Iwo Jima Day.
