Under current law, longevity pay for fire fighters and police officers in municipalities with over 10,000 people has remained unchanged for decades at $4 per month for each year of service up to 25 years.  Municipalities do not have the authority to raise this rate.

 

S.B. 1499 provides that a municipality can pay at least $4 a month per year of service.

 

As proposed, S.B. 1499 amends current law relating to longevity pay for peace officers and firefighters in certain municipalities.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

 

SECTION 1. Amends Section 141.032, Local Government Code, to entitle each member of the fire or police department in a municipality with a population of 10,000 or more, in addition to all other money paid for services rendered in the department, to longevity pay of at least $4 a month, rather than longevity pay of $4 a month, for each year of service in the department, not to exceed 25 years.

 

SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2015.
