        |  | A BILL TO BE ENTITLED | 
      
        |  | AN ACT | 
      
        |  | relating to the waiver of fines, fees, and court costs imposed on a | 
      
        |  | student convicted of truancy. | 
      
        |  | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | 
      
        |  | SECTION 1.  Article 45.054(j), Code of Criminal Procedure, | 
      
        |  | is amended to read as follows: | 
      
        |  | (j)  Notwithstanding any other law, a [ A] county, justice, or | 
      
        |  | municipal court shall [ may] waive or reduce a fine, fee, or court | 
      
        |  | cost imposed under this article if the court finds that payment of | 
      
        |  | the fine, fee, or court cost would cause financial hardship. | 
      
        |  | SECTION 2.  Article 45.054(j), Code of Criminal Procedure, | 
      
        |  | as amended by this Act, applies to a proceeding for failure to | 
      
        |  | attend school that occurs on or after the effective date of this Act | 
      
        |  | regardless of whether the offense that is the subject of the | 
      
        |  | proceeding was committed before, on, or after the effective date of | 
      
        |  | this Act. | 
      
        |  | SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
