A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to the early voting period in a runoff election. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Sections 85.001(b) and (e), Election Code, are |
|
|
amended to read as follows: |
|
|
(b) For a [special] runoff election [for the office of state
|
|
|
senator or state representative or for a runoff primary election], |
|
|
the period begins on the 10th day before election day. |
|
|
(e) For an election held on the uniform election date in May |
|
|
[and any resulting runoff election], the period for early voting by |
|
|
personal appearance begins on the 12th day before election day and |
|
|
continues through the fourth day before election day. |
|
|
SECTION 2. Section 85.005, Election Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (e) to read as follows: |
|
|
(e) Notwithstanding Subsections (a), (b), and (d), in a |
|
|
runoff election, early voting by personal appearance at the main |
|
|
early voting polling place shall be conducted for at least 12 hours |
|
|
on at least two weekdays. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
