CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act would |
ensure that public employees receive fair Social Security benefits |
after retiring; and |
WHEREAS, This bipartisan legislation would repeal the |
Windfall Elimination Provision which reduces the Social Security |
benefits of workers who also have employment not covered by Social |
Security, and replace that outdated and arbitrary formula with a |
calculation based on the overall Social Security contributions and |
work history of public employees, allowing them to receive |
retirement benefits commensurate to private-sector workers; and |
WHEREAS, The act would raise lifetime benefits for such |
workers as teachers, firefighters, and police officers by an |
estimated $20,000 to more than $32,400; moreover, it would not have |
an impact on Social Security trust funds; and |
WHEREAS, Each day, public servants improve the quality of |
life for their fellow citizens in innumerable ways, and they are |
indeed deserving of equal opportunity to enjoy a secure and |
comfortable retirement; now, therefore, be it |
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
Legislature hereby respectfully urge the Congress of the United |
States to pass the Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act; and, be |
it further |
RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official |
copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to |
the speaker of the House of Representatives and the president of the |
Senate of the United States Congress, and to all members of the |
Texas delegation to Congress with the request that this resolution |
be officially entered in the Congressional Record as a memorial to |
the Congress of the United States of America. |
