R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Students, parents, educators, and community members
  throughout the State of Texas are celebrating National Teacher Day
  on May 5, 2015; and
         WHEREAS, This worthy tradition dates to the 1940s, when
  Arkansas educator Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with
  political and educational leaders to suggest an official day to
  honor teachers across the country; her efforts attracted the
  attention of Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded the United
  States Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day; the event is now
  observed on the Tuesday of the first full week of May; and
         WHEREAS, Texas public schools employ more than 300,000
  teachers, who play an essential role in the lives of students across
  the state; as role models, motivators, and mentors, teachers give
  students a vision of what they are capable of achieving and equip
  them with skills that will help them to build rewarding, productive
  lives; and
         WHEREAS, The quality education that teachers provide is vital
  to the future of young people and society alike, and the exceptional
  contributions made by all who teach are indeed deserving of an
  expression of appreciation from the residents of the Lone Star
  State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize May 5, 2015, as National Teacher Day
  in Texas and extend to teachers throughout the state sincere best
  wishes for success in their important work.
